The elderly man’s spirits were lifted upon being reunited with his beloved dog, and he observed a marked improvement in himself.

James Wathen, 73, is a patient at Baptist Health Corbin in Corbin, Kentucky who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. His physical condition is fragile and his mental capacity has diminished to the point that it impedes recovery. On hearing that Wathen had been separated from his one-eyed Chihuahua, Bubba, the nurses went out of their way in order to reunite them.

James Wathen, aged 73, was close to death before his much-loved pet dog Bubba paid him a visit.

Deanna Myers, the director of the Knox Whitley Animal Shelter, shared her experience on Facebook when Bubba was brought to James. She mentioned that grief quickly turned into a cuddle session between James and Bubba, which made her realize that animals are not just pets but beloved family members.

After Wathen was admitted, the nurses followed Bubba’s whereabouts to the Knox-Whitley Animal Shelter and found that he had been given to a foster family. Since being left by his owner, Bubba has displayed indications of mental anguish.

On October 11th, a Saturday, Wathen was reunited with his beloved dog Bubba due to the efforts of the nurses. With each stroke and playful interaction, feelings of nostalgia and joy began to build inside him.

Deanna Myers, the Director of the Knox Whitley Animal Shelter, recently shared an emotional post on Facebook. She described how James was moved to tears when Bubba hugged him, reminding us that animals are not just pets but beloved members of our families.

After spending some time with his canine companion, Wathen’s mood had improved.

Wathen had a complete recovery during his stay. The nurses observed that the following day, he had an unexpected change, managing to eat and sit up which he was not able to do before.

Baptist Health Corbin is doing their best to make sure Hathen can spend time with Bubba, since he has been such a positive influence on him.
